ATSC-Dec-2015-3_0The first-ever ATSC 3.0 experimental broadcasts using Single Frequency Networks (SFNs) under way in Washington and Baltimore are demonstrating how SFNs can help assure high quality of service throughout a broadcaster’s service area with the next-generation ATSC 3.0 standard.

Results from specific coverage field-tests will support the finalization of the ATSC 3.0 Studio Transmitter Link standard and help define the stream interface regimens to feed ATSC 3.0 SFN transmitters.

Launched by ATSC members ONE Media, Sinclair Broadcast Group and TeamCast, the broadcast tests are intended to validate real-world operation and performance of SFNs to deliver a range of next-generation services. Using a full power, multi-site test platform on channel 43 in both markets, the testing is designed to:

  • Leverage SFNs for over-the-air broadcasting to mobile, portable and indoor devices,
  • Illustrate opportunities for addressing services and content to geographically smaller service zones,
  • Verify SFN timing and distribution supporting ATSC standardization, and
  • Confirm various modeling techniques.

The transmitters in Washington and Baltimore are each driven by the latest TeamCast ATSC 3.0 exciter, which has been integrated for U.S. applications by COMARK.
